A vibrant 1940 oil painting of the American Southwest. Purple and violet mountains rise in late-afternoon light over a sunlit desert of saguaro cactus, sage and pink earth. A horse-drawn covered wagon crosses the valley, and an old wagon wheel rests in the foreground. Thick, textured brushwork gives the light a warm, shimmering feel.
Signed Haven Charles Ketelson and dated '40, lower left. Original oil, framed in a substantial gilt frame with green trim and a linen liner.
Styling: Made for a Southwestern, Spanish Revival or ranch-style home. It looks wonderful over a dark wood console with Mexican pottery, terracotta and a wooden bowl of fruit. Also a great anchor piece above a sofa or fireplace.
